Asaya Fujita (born 1934) is a playwright and director. He
started his career as a playwright while he was in Waseda
University majoring in Theater Arts. After working as a
TV scriptwriter, he has worked for variety of projects such as
contemporary theaters, theaters for children and young people,
musicals, and opera as a free-lance playwright and director. He has
created works in collaboration with Russian, Korean and Chinese
theater professionals. One of his works for young
audience, "Bekkanko-Oni," has been translated into
English, German, Russian, Chinese, French and Hungarian, and has
become repertoire in theaters for children and young people in
those countries. The characteristic of his play is to render
contemporary theme with Japanese traditional drama methods. He has
received several awards for such dramaturgy. He has also worked as
a chairperson of the board of the Japan Directors Association, and
as a board member for several other organizations. Currently, he
teaches at musical performance department at Showa Academia Musicae
as a visiting professor.
