World Day for Theatre for Children and Young People is celebrated annually on March 20th in all ASSITEJ centers across the globe. For the next three years, the day is framed by the global ASSITEJ campaign of "Take a child to the theatre today!" ASSITEJ SA hosted a media launch on 31 January asking that every school, family member, theatre company, theatre artist and organisation, as well as every potential funder, join hands in recognition of the Right of the Child to freedom of expression (Article 13) which includes "freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice". The campaign includes a promotional sms line where donations can be made to "take a child to the theatre today", as well as an invitation to all ASSITEJ members to participate in ensuring there are performances and arts activities for children and their families on March 20th. The day will be celebrated in Cape Town with the Family Season, a local festival based in Vrygrond and Observatory, which this year will include seven exciting theatre productions, several workshops and a parade. Writer of the World Day message for 2012, celebrated French-Canadian playwright, Suzanne Lebeau, will be attending the festival and giving a workshop for writers during the period.
