    WORLD DAY MESSAGE

    Wednesday, February 15, 2012

On March 20th, every year since 2001, the World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People has been celebrated all over the world by the international community of theatrepractitioners for childen and young people.
The main purpose of the World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People is to attract attention of a wider public to the art of theatre for children and young people.
Events during the World Day may be special performances, open rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines etc, etc. Events are primarely organised by national ASSITEJ centres or by theatre companies or theatre organisations.
National centres have full freedom to organise the national events, but make sure to include general information on children and young people´s theatre, its history and importance to society and, of course, on ASSITEJ as an international organisation.
It is important to inform the press and general media, as well as authorities and governmental bodies about your events.
The World Day message for 2012 is written by Suzanne Lebeau.

INTERVIEW WITH PRESIDENT OF ASSITEJ, YVETTE HARDIE

    Monday, February 06, 2012

Q: Can you outline your background on how you first became involved in working with theatre for children and young people?

A: I first got involved with theatre for young audiences after studying drama at UCT, where I trained as an actress. My first professional acting job was for PACT, touring with educational shows to schools across what was then the Transvaal province – these were often rural schools where children had never or very seldom seen theatre, or out of the way mining towns, where there was little in the way of theatre. I started off acting in these productions, but later began directing them as well. I was fortunate enough to work with fantastic directors such as Lara Foot whose passion for theatre and for finding new ways to access young minds and hearts was hugely inspiring. It was very challenging, touring to places where people had never seen theatre before, and I really enjoyed the interaction with young audiences.

    Sunday, February 05, 2012

World Day for Theatre for Children and Young People is celebrated annually on March 20th in all ASSITEJ centers across the globe. For the next three years, the day is framed by the global ASSITEJ campaign of "Take a child to the theatre today!" ASSITEJ SA hosted a media launch on 31 January asking that every school, family member, theatre company, theatre artist and organisation, as well as every potential funder, join hands in recognition of the Right of the Child to freedom of expression (Article 13) which includes "freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice". The campaign includes a promotional sms line where donations can be made to "take a child to the theatre today", as well as an invitation to all ASSITEJ members to participate in ensuring there are performances and arts activities for children and their families on March 20th. The day will be celebrated in Cape Town with the Family Season, a local festival based in Vrygrond and Observatory, which this year will include seven exciting theatre productions, several workshops and a parade. Writer of the World Day message for 2012, celebrated French-Canadian playwright, Suzanne Lebeau, will be attending the festival and giving a workshop for writers during the period.
