Irish TEAM’s production of Devotion Coming to South Africa: 1-19 September 2009 Assitej SA is working with Irish theatre in education company, TEAM to ensure a successful presentation of their play Devotion intargeted schools in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Devotion by Leo Butler is a gritty, humorous and provocative piece of theatre about conflict and its impact on the lives of young children. This piece will play exclusively in selected schools, and presentations include a workshop with the company. There will also be two public performances of the production.
Public Forums: Interactivity of Theatre and Education: 10 and 19 September 2009
Linked to the Devotion tour, there will be two Public Forums to discuss the "Interactivity between Theatre and Education" - with invited education and art and culture department officials in attendance, educators, and theatre
practitioners interested in working in schools.
At this forum we will explore how to revitalise and strengthen theatre in education in South Africa.
ACYTA MEETING will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa: 17-19 September 2009 Assitej South Africa will host an ACYTA (African Children and Youth Theatre Arena) Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 17 -19 September 2009.
Delegates from Assitej chapters across the African continent will attend.
The meeting will be linked to the Arterial Network conference (20-22September) just before the IFACAA World Congress on Arts and Culture (22-25 September).
Call for participation: Out the Box Family Festival, Cape Town, SA: 20-28 March 2010
Assitej SA is working with UNIMA SA to curate the Family Festival component of the Out The Box Festival of Puppetry and Visual Performance, the
innovative Cape Town-based festival which takes place at the Baxter theatre from 20-28 March 2010.
Out the Box “is fast becoming South Africa’s premier puppetry and visual performance event” (Cape Times). Adrienne Sichel of the Sunday Independent described it as a “conceptual wonderland…from the culturally charged
cauldron of Cape Town creativity”.
The festival is calling for applications from artists and companies who would be interested in participating in the festival this year. Applications for participation have been extended to 15 September 2009. Go to www.unimasouthafrica.org for more information.
Call for participation: National Arts Festival 2010, Grahamstown, SA:
The 2010 National Arts Festival is going to be a massive global celebration of the arts; it will run in Grahamstown from 20 June to 4 July.
The Fringe Festival has no selection criteria and is open to all artists who register to present their artistic work. The deadline for registration on the Fringe is 15 January 2010. All costs involved in Fringe productions /exhibitions are the responsibility of the artist or company themselves.

The Crossing: A young man finds himself in a situation that seems hopeless –he sees no future for himself in a country on the edge of disintegration.
The young man was Jonathan Khumbulani Nkala, and the country was Zimbabwe.
This solo presentation tells the story of what he decided to do in order to achieve his objective, which was ‘life in abundance’.
